Nitrian Desert

Nitrian Desert
Located in Upper Egypt south of Alexandria (qq.v.), where the celebrated hermit Ammon (died ca. 350) established a loose association of hermits (q.v.) who practiced individual asceticism (q.v.). It was left to Ammon's contemporary, Pachomios (q.v.), to establish the first koinobion (q.v.) for monks.
